Anti Money Laundering Investigation Manager - Financial Crime Compliance

Location: Asia Pacific-Hong Kong-Kowloon-Hong Kong

Financial Crime Compliance aligns current activities within Global Risk and helps to build these into a more integrated framework to conduct Customer Due Diligence which enables HSBC to manage financial crime risk more effectively. It builds stronger controls to improve the way Financial Crime Compliance risks are managed in order to spot gaps as well as trends so that the team can take action. It proactively gathers and analyses financial intelligence in a smart way so that suspicious transactions, activities or connections can be identified and we can adequately protect our customers from the threat of financial crime.
We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Anti Money Laundering Investigation Manager .
Principal responsibilities
  • Provide effective management and leadership for a team of anti money laundering Investigators Senior Investigators.
  • Responsible for overseeing the effective and compliant implementation and sustainable day to day execution of anomalous activity identification and investigation, anomalous activity reporting in accordance with agreed reporting requirements and SLA
  • Management and oversight of case escalation to Investigations Exchange, Anti Bribery Corruption and Global Sanctions.
  • Liaison with appropriate stakeholders, including Financial crime compliance Operations, and Regulatory compliance.
  • Accurate and timely production of Management Information to ensure KPI are accurately recorded and used to effectively measure and manage individual and team performance, identify Anti money laundering risk management trends and issues, escalate any necessary issues to management, including as appropriate the Country nominated officer and or Anti money laundering Investigations Regional Head.
  • Ensure that the team processes a proportionate number of Anomalous Activity Reports and Consents to the agreed procedural standards required and within agreed service levels.
  • Ensure appropriate proactive use of media reports and relevant internet sources to gather intelligence and identify customers of HSBC involved in crime money laundering and terrorism etc.
  • Deal with enquiries from colleagues of other HSBC business areas in a professional, responsive manner, giving them appropriate guidance, referring to management where necessary.
  • Deal with enquiries from external sources for example other financial institutions, in a professional manner, providing them with appropriate information, referring to management where necessary and appropriate.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders
  • Effectively manage and lead the team providing guidance and support as appropriate to ensure team objectives are met.
  • Work effectively and professionally with colleagues across the organization and in particular those connected business units
  • Ensure performance meets the requirements of any relevant service level agreements or turn around times. 
  • Escalate in good time where these may not be met.
  • At all times adhere to Group and Regulatory policies.
  • Ensure costs are managed effectively and within the Teams annual budget seeking appropriate authority for expenses in line with bank policy.
  • Generate ideas to improve team efficiency.
  • Consider methods used to prioritise cases for work and suggest means of improvement where appropriate.
  • The Anti money laundering Investigations Manager role is part of Financial Crime Compliance and responsible for ensuring that assigned cases including Production Orders and Anomalous Activity Reports are thoroughly and professionally investigated and, where appropriate, reported to the Authorities in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • The Anti money laundering Investigations Manager will also provide telephone, email guidance to all internal business areas where appropriate.
  • Providing accurate and timely Management Information as required.


  • Experience working in Financial Crime Compliance, Anti Money Laundering or equivalent environments, including transaction monitoring, customer screening, SAR filing.
  • Some knowledge of client reviews, including relationship reviews on a periodic or trigger basis.
  • Experience in undertaking investigations analysis into customer activity with the ability to draw inferences from the information.
  • Experience in managing a successful team in a pressured, turnaround time driven, environment.
  • Experience in compilation of reports and or SAR reporting experience.
  • Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of sharing information effectively, in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Consistently achieved objectives set for them and taken action to improve their own performance.
  • Strong organisational skills. 
  • Worked collaboratively with other colleagues, supporting them when possible.
  • Experience of personally complying with business processes, rules and regulations.
  • Previous law enforcement, legal, forensic accountancy or regulatory experience an advantage.
  • Previous Financial crime compliance experience within a universal service bank preferred.
  • ICA ML or ACAMS qualification an advantage.  
The chosen candidate for this role will be required to undergo enhanced vetting. Subject to local laws, this will require the individual to satisfactorily pass a series of additional checks as part of the recruitment process and on an ongoing basis, if appointed to the role.
