Manager, Data Science/Statistics, Global Business Analytics

Location: HK-Hong Kong-Hong Kong

Located in Hong Kong, BASF’s regional headquarters oversees more than 16,000 employees at about 100 sites across Asia Pacific. In addition to regional business units, Hong Kong office also houses regional functional units including Corporate Affairs, Finance and Controlling, Human Resources, Management Consulting, Procurement and Supply Chain Services.
Objectives of the Position
  • The team Global Business Analytics co-creates and delivers innovative data-driven solutions for better business decisions through mathematical modelling (operations research, statistical analysis, and data science), the development of sustainable programs, as well as IT solutions (process and visualization of results and “Big Data”).
  • This position reports to the Head of Smart Data, Global Business Analytics and will be a team member of the Data Science and Statistics Team, which provides BASF-wide quantitative decision support for multiple application areas, based on data analysis, data based modelling and optimization, in close cooperation with business units and central functions.
Job Responsibilities
  • Act as a key stakeholder in Asia Pacific to connect the Global Business Analytics – Smart Data team with business and functional units in the region in order to understand their business needs
  • Drive projects, such as statistical process, quality control, econometrics, risk assessment, market intelligence and etc. by closely co-operating with business units and central functions, like strategic planning and controlling, marketing and sales production and quality control, supply chain management or procurement
  • Communicate the ideas and solutions to a broad community of non-data scientists
  • Initiate the development of innovative solutions in the area of data science or statistics and the application to business challenges in the region
  • Define, extract and analyse data from a variety of sources to create and deliver business insights for various application fields, like marketing, production, supply chain management and research by using mathematical & statistical methods and models
  • Select, evaluate and implement analytical methods and options based on own development, available research results and in collaboration with external research institutions
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with academic research groups to evaluate new approaches and explore new application opportunities
  • Leverage knowledge from outside and ensure a sustainable implementation and knowledge transfer
  • Mentor and coach other team members and support their functions by providing expertise and insights into BASF’s organization and projects.
  • Identify external suppliers and partners (academic and non-academic) for innovative methods and technologies for advancing business analytics
  • Holder of Master degree in Statistics, Data Analytics, Business Administration or Engineering with a strong quantitative focus. PhD degree is a plus
  • At least 4 years of experience in applying statistical tools like R to real-world problems
  • At least 3 years of experience in project management or data analytics consulting in an industrial context
  • At least 3 years of experience in combining and transforming data from heterogeneous sources
  • Proven track record of delivering cross-disciplinary projects with measurable business impact
  • Superior consultancy mind-set with a high degree of flexibility
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new businesses quickly
  • Good knowledge on statistical and mathematical methods for business and data analytics and their industrial application
  • Good understanding of IT system set-ups, e.g. SAP and related data warehouses
  • Superior understanding of internal and external data needs in business processes
  • Expertise in the development of multi-user analytical IT solutions is a plus
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain sustainable internal and external business relationships and foster cross-functional understanding in a diverse organization
  • Excellent project management and collaboration skills
  • High proficiency in English and Mandarin
  • Willing to travel up to 10% including visiting different BASF sites in Asia Pacific or overseas
