Job Description

Regional Head, Life and Health Risk Management, AXA Asia Regional Office

Location: HONG KONG

Purpose of the Role:

- Ensure that effective life risk management frameworks are established and implemented in the Asia region to comply with AXA Group and relevant regional and international risk management requirements and to manage risks that may threaten attainment of AXA’s strategies and goals in the Asia region

- Lead and manage AXA’s best practice guidelines, standards, processes and quality control on experience studies, assumption setting, bonus methodology and recommendations, and product pricing relating to life business

- Lead life reinsurance activities across the region

- Lead on special life insurance risk initiatives and ad hoc projects for the region.

- Provide second line opinion to business and technical matters relating to all life insurance business underwritten in the region including actuarial technical provisions, underwriting, internal model and data quality investigations on life business matters

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead the establishment of regional life risk management policies and frameworks that comply with AXA Group and other relevant policies:

• Adapt risk management policies to Asia, working with country teams to adapt these policies to local conditions

• Define reporting and risk assessment standards in line with Group policies

2. Responsible for the comprehensive embedding of AXA’s risk appetite framework for AXA Asia Region including the regional ORSA for Life and Health Risks:

• Roll out processes to ensure that each country/function identifies and quantifies risks

• Ensure that risk management principles, practices, contingencies, etc. are identified as appropriate for each risk

• Ensure that relevant risk management information is regularly obtained from regional countries to support regional decision-making and then transmitted through to the AXA Group, as required

3. Responsible in the build and decimation of a knowledge base on life risk assessment and management to improve risk management in the region:

• Leverage AXA global network to identify best practices on risk management

• Assist to sharing of knowledge on risk management throughout the region

• Assist in promoting awareness of risk management principles through establishing best practices

4. Set policies and provide a second line opinion on reinsurance activities of the region and coordinates with shareholders and external parties, including financing, catastrophe, intra group and external sourcing

5. Review and provide a second line opinion on life reserving (S2 and Stat), assumptions, experience studies, bonus methodology, internal model and data quality in accordance to governance:

• Adapt Group policies and apply local adjustments where necessary to allow effective implementation in the region

• Actively communicate with the Local Entities and Regional product team to ensure processes are interpreted and implemented according to standards

6. Review and provide a second opinion on life product developments or re-pricing, with a veto role via the Local Product Management Committee (LPMC)

7. Review and provide a second opinion on life underwriting policies and conditions via the Local Product Management Committee (LPMC)

8. Responsible for the support the guidance to local entities of Group economic capital requirements:

• Ensure capital reporting in Local entities compliant with Group directives

• Acquire clearance of capital reporting results in Local entities, regional office and AXA SA.

• Support other ad-hoc economic capital projects such as Solvency II

9. Management and supervision including prioritization work of subordinate

• Develop staff risk management skills and knowledge with on-going training

• Contribute to promoting a positive, high performance working environment where Regional Actuarial work cohesively across and within teams



  • More than 10+ PQE Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (or its international equivalent). CERA qualified will be given added advantage.
  • Specialization in Life Insurance with experience with Solvency II, Asian & European regulatory and industry requirements.
  • Proven strong people, process and business management skills
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills and an ability to work successfully with senior managers across the business
  • Strong communication skills and a proven ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams
